Transmission Problems

The Automotive Industry is rapidly changing every decade. The introduction of new technology has revolutionized this industry. Nowadays vehicle manufacturers are spending a massive amount on research and development. But with such advanced features and technology, new issues are also added. The most important and researched components of any vehicle are its engine and transmission. You surely have known about the engine, but generally, people get confused about what a transmission is and how Transmission Problems affect the efficiency of a vehicle. Don’t worry, here is a complete guide about transmission and its problems.

What is a Transmission?

You may have heard the word transmission for the first time. But surely, you know about the gearbox. Well, they both are the same thing. Generally, cars come with 5-Speed Transmission or 6-Speed Transmission. It means that the vehicle has 5 gears or 6 gears to raise the speed.

There are 2 types of transmissions of a car that are Manual Transmission and Automatic Transmission. Manual Transmission refers to the transmission system where the car driver requires to shift gears manually. Automatic Transmission is a new concept that refers to the transmission system where the gear shifts automatically depending on the speed of the car.

You can also look at the Pros and Cons of Manual and Automatic Transmission in detail.

How does Transmission work?

We will not discuss in much detail the working of the transmission. But you should know how a transmission works before looking at its problem for better understanding.

So, the working of transmission is dependent on the engine. The power produced inside the engine by the burning fuel inside the combustion chamber leads to the movement of the crankshaft. It in turn helps to provide a driving force to the car through the transmission. For proper functioning of the Transmission, transmission fluid is required.

Transmission Problems

Transmission is a major component of a car. Issues with the transmissions must not be avoided and require immediate fixing. Otherwise, it may even lead to even damage in some cases that will cost you much of your hard-earned money. So, let’s discuss some of the major Transmission Problems:-

Leakage of Transmission Fluid

Transmission Fluid not only helps to lubricate the transmission components. But also, it helps to cool down the temperature inside the engine. Due to the burning of engine oil inside the combustion chamber, the temperature inside is very high. Well, Car Engine Coolants are there to lower the temperature but the transmission fluid also contributes to cool down the temperature to some extent and prevents wear and tear of engine and transmission parts.

The leakage of transmission fluid can easily be detected by a sweet smell or by leaking of a red color fluid. Whenever you detect such a situation, check the level of transmission fluid by a dipstick. If the level of fluid is showing low on the dipstick, then there can be a case of leaking. Also, if you don’t know how to check transmission fluid, take it to the auto repair shop. Prefer taking it to auto repair shops accept auto body repair shops. There is a major difference between auto body repair and auto repair shops if you don’t know.

Red Engine Light

Red Warning Engine light indicates the problem with your engine or there may be an issue with the transmission. There may be a minor or major issue with your transmission. Overheating can be a reason or low engine or transmission fluid can be another reason. You should not ignore this warning light and must take your car to the service station for in-depth checking.

Strange Noises

One of the major and most common issues with the transmission is the unusual and strange noises while shifting the gears. It may happen due to several reasons. One of them is that the level of transmission fluid is very low, which leads to these unusual sounds. Secondly, there might be a major problem with the transmission itself and it requires replacement.

Also, there may be several other reasons causing these strange noises like alternator damage, corrosion of engine parts, etc.

Clutch Damage

There is another issue with the transmission of a car. Sometimes, the clutch damages because of improper use. The shifting in gear is done while pressing the clutch. The improper pressing and releasing of the clutch frequently leads to clutch damage and requires replacement. It can also lead to damage to the whole transmission system.

Bad Smell

The majority of the reasons that lead to transmission failure are related to the transmission fluid. A bad smell or the burning smell of the transmission fluid is the indication for low fuel. It causes an increase in the temperature inside the engine. It in turn leads to the damage of engine and transmission parts.

No Driving Force

Sometimes, the car doesn’t respond or move on shifting a gear. It is because of the problem with the transmission. Either the transmission system has been broken or there is a loose connection or the wires connected with the crankshaft and transmission are somehow detached. In the first scenario, you may need to replace the transmission but in the second case, the issue can simply be resolved by identifying the loose connections.

It is highly recommended to take your vehicle to a repair shop when such an issue occurs. Because these issues can lead to complete engine failure.

Conclusion

In this detailed discussion about the transmission problems, you must have got an idea about the transmission, it’s working, and major issues that need to be resolved. Remember, in some cases, transmission needs replacement. Buying a new transmission system can be costly. So, its alternative is to buy a Used Car Transmission. It will definitely save you some bucks. But, it requires extra maintenance and consistent fuel checking.
