BMW is one of the luxurious brands known for its luxurious cars. These cars are known for their Unique Style, Powerful engines, Power Window Front, Multi functioning Steering Wheels, Alloy Wheels, and all other features that a luxurious car has. These cars may be expensive but their features make them worth buying. The engines used in the BMW are one of the most powerful and reliable engines that make these cars more powerful.

1. BMW B58 Engine:-

The BMW B58 engine is one of the most famous engines for cars. It is a turbocharged straight-six engine. This engine was manufactured by BMW in 2015 and was still in use. The BMW B58 replaces the most famous engine N55. this engine was launched in the F30 340i.

The B58 is also named in the 10 best engines of Ward’s in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020. It is the most reliable engine as compared to N55 and N54. In these engines, problems like fuel-injector failures, HPFP failure are not applicable that making B58 different and most reliable. 

2. BMW M20 Engine:-

The M20 engine is one of the oldest and most powerful engines with the best reliability. It is also known as a straight-six naturally aspirated engine. It was first built from 1993 to 1977 and after that, the M50 engine replaced them with E36 cars.

The features of M20 engines are as follows:-

  • It has an inline power unit with 6 cylinders.
  • It contains 12 valves in its design.
  • It has a belt drive of the gas distribution mechanism.
  • The cylinder block of the M20 is made up of cast iron.
  • It is equipped with a duralumin head.

Before and until 1982, the M20 was produced and designed with the designation of M60 that was assigned for the Bavarian Company. The cost of M20 was approximately 35000 rubbles at that time.

 The four modifications are given to M20 to make it more power unit: M20V20, M20V23, M20V25, M20V27. The difference between these modifications is their power unit which is from 2.0 Litres to 27 Litres. It has a piston stroke of 75mm and a cylinder diameter of 84mm. The weight of M20 is approximately 117 kg (dry). The M20 was installed in the BMW Z1.

3. BMW M50 Engine:-  

The M50 engine is one of the most reliable engines of BMW. It contains a 6-cylinder engine. The M50 comes with three modifications with different power units that are 2.0 litres, 2.4 litres, and 2.5 litres. It was produced in 1992-2000.

The features of M50 engines are as follows:-

  • It has a horsepower of 148 hp in 2.0L, 185 hp in 2.4L and 189 hp in 2.7L.
  • It has a dual overhead camshaft(DOHC).
  • It has a displacement of 3.0-3.2L.
  •  It has a block material of cast iron. 
  • It has a head material of Aluminium. 
  • It has a compression ratio of 11.3:1.457
  • It has a double variable valve timing on both camshafts.

The BMW M50 comes after the M20 and is more powerful than M20 and is found in cars like E56 and E36.

4. BMW S62 Engine:- 

The S62 is one of the most reliable and famous engines in the family of BMW. It is aspirated with the 5 litre V8. It was produced in 1998-2003.

The features of S62 engines are as follows:-

  • It has a horsepower of 394 hp.
  • It has a compression ratio of 11.0:1.
  • It has a configuration ratio of 90° V8.
  • It has a displacement of 4.9L.
  • It has block and head material of Aluminium.
  • It has a valvetrain of DOHC.

5. BMW N52 Engine:-

The BMW N52 Engine is the most reliable engine with advanced technology. It is one of the most refined, developed engines with the highest output. It was Produced in 2004-2015.

The features of N52 engines are as follows:-

  • It has a configuration of Straight-6.
  • It has a displacement of 2.5-3.0L.
  • It has a Block material of Magnesium-Aluminium.
  • It has a head material of Aluminium.
  • It has a predecessor to the BMW M54.
  • It has a successor of BMW N53.

BMW N52 Engine replaced the M54 Engine and it is also the first water-cooled engine that is made from magnesium and aluminum.

6. BMW M54 Engine:-

The M54 is one of the most famous and reliable engines. From 2002-2003, the M54 was ranked in the Ward’s best 10 engines list. It has 4 modifications that are M54B22, M54B25, M54B30, and M54B32. It is installed in the models like Z4 2.5L, Z4 2.2L, and Z4 3.0L. It has no technical update version in the seven years of production. It was produced from 2000 to 2004.

The features of BMW M54 engines are as follows:-

  • It has a configuration of Straight-6 petrol engine.
  • It has a displacement of 2.2-3.0L.
  • It contains a block material of Aluminium.
  • It contains a head material of Aluminium. 
  • It has a valvetrain of DOHC.
  • It has a predecessor and successor of M52 and N52. 

After the manufacturing of the N52 Engine in 2004, the M54 disappears due to less power as compared to N52. In 2006, Z4 replaced the M54 engine with the N52 engine which makes Z4 the most powerful and reliable than before.
